A Mother, a Teacher, a Social Worker, and more!
Dear Parents and Students, I am able to offer you a sincere and motivated commitment, experience working with children, a strong work ethic and life experience. Currently I am employed full-time as a special education teacher in a middle school in the Bronx. For the past six years I have been the resource room teacher for the 7th and 8th grade classes, providing instructional support both in the classroom as well as in a separate small group setting. I facilitate learning, which includes...
autism
I have taken special education graduate courses that included learning about autism, how it is diagnosed and how to work with students who have have received an autism diagnoses. During the past 10 years of teaching I have worked with several students who have been diagnosed by a physician with autism and with several students who may be autistic but have never been diagnosed for several reasons. I have also become self-educated, reading books, technical and biographical, as well as many articles that deal with autism. Finally, I believe I possess the temperament necessary to help autistic children learn to navigate the requirements of our educational system as well as the community outside.
ADD/ADHD
Master's certification in special education PreK-12th grade. 9 years' experience with NYCBOE teaching middle school (6th-8th grade) special education students including students with ADD & ADHD. Lessons are formulated to include differentiated instruction and various learning styles as well as to encourage positive reinforcement of individual and individual responsibility for learning and future direction by helping motivate and empower children to take control of their own learning and improve their behavior with specific goals. I have created different behavioral plans, involving the students in the process, using peer 'tutoring' for positive behavior as well as for academic progress. I have also involved parents, emphasizing their children's positive attributes as well as their future possibilities, using the same positive reinforcement I use daily, in class, with the children. My hope is that we can help children understand themselves and learn how best to empower themselves to become the productive, caring members of society they are meant to be.
